The Whangarei District is an administrative unit in the Northland region in New Zealand . The district council, called Whangarei District Council , is based in Whangarei City , as is the district administration.
Origin of name
The name Whangarei is interpreted differently. Whangārei-te-rerenga-parāoa translated means the place where the whales gather. Parāoa is the term for sperm whale and whales had a special meaning in the Māori culture . Parāoa also represented the chief , so that whangārei-te-rerenga-parāoa can also be interpreted as the place where the chiefs gathered.

Geographical location
The Whangarei District is located southeast of the Far North District in the northern part of the North Island . With 2712 km² of pure land, it is the smallest district in the Northland region, but it is probably the most populous. With 76,995 inhabitants counted in 2013, the district has a population density of 28.4 inhabitants per km².
The district is bounded to the west and south by the Kaipara District , to the north by the Far North District and to the east by the Pacific Ocean . The eastern coastal landscape is rugged and has, in addition to numerous bays, some natural harbors, of which Whāngārei Harbor is one of the largest.
By far the largest city in the district, which consists of two wards , is Whangarei with around 45,100 inhabitants (as of 2013). This means that 58.6% of the district's population live in the city.

The climate in the district is determined by the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is referred to as subtropical . The average monthly temperatures are between 15 ° C and 20 ° C in summer and between 11 ° C and 12 ° C in winter. Frost occurs between one and four times a month. The annual rainfall is 1490 mm, with the relative humidity fluctuating between 78 and 88% on average over the year.

The Whangarei District is one of the districts in New Zealand where the Polynesian ancestors of the Māori first settled when they came to New Zealand. According to legend, the Polynesian navigator Kupe around 950 n. Chr. On his journey back to Hawaiki the Whangarei Harbor have spotted and its hinterland. Oral tradition says that 50 years later, Polynesians, as the ancestors of the Ngāpuhi, first settled at Hokianga Harbor and subsequently in other areas of Northland, including the Whangarei District . From 1700 the area around Whangarei Harbor was densely populated with many Hapu des Iwi Ngāpuhi .
With the arrival of the Europeans, the population mixed, so that from the late 19th century onwards one can speak of a multicultural society in Whangarei .

In 2013, 18,720 of the district's 76,995 inhabitants were of Māori origin (24.3%). The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 25,300, compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
Origin and languages
In the 2013 census, when asked about ethnic group membership, 80.0% said they were European, 26.2% said they had Māori roots, 2.9% came from the islands of the Pacific region and 3.5% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 16.5% of the population said they were born overseas and 6.1% of the population spoke Māori , 21.3% of the Māori .

The Whangarei District itself is divided into six wards , the Mangakahia-maungatapere Ward , the Hikurangi - Costal Ward , the Denby Ward , the Okara Ward , the Whangarei Heads Ward and the Bream Bay Ward and is politically controlled by the Whangarei District Council , headed by a Mayor and 13 Councilors . The 13 councilors share responsibility for the six wards . The mayor and council members are re-elected every three years.

In 2015 the district had 9,294 companies with a total of 36,211 employees. By far the largest branch of industry in the district is the manufacturing sector with 26.4%, followed by 8.0% of the health system and 6.5% of agriculture and forestry together with fishing.

The district is connected by the north-south New Zealand State Highway 1 , which crosses the district in the eastern part and runs through Whangarei . The State Highway 14 branches in Whangarei on State Highway 1 to the west and binds Dargaville in the adjacent Kaipara District of.
