history

The area of the district was originally settled by the Māori tribes Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu . The first European settlers came in 1841. In 1853 the cooper Joseph Master founded a community of settlers and asked the then governor Edward Gray for approval for his settlement project. After the chief of the local Māori , Te Korou , was ready to sell land on the banks of the Waipoua River , the community settled where the town of Masterton is today and uses the name of its founder for it. In 1877 Masterton was named a borough and in 1900 the surrounding area became a county , as was Castlepoint . But both counties were merged in 1958 and Mauriceville County was added. In 1989, as part of the administrative reform, the Masterton Borough was merged with Masterton County and the Masterton District was founded.
