The South Wairarapa District is one for Region Wellington belonging management unit in New Zealand . The district council, called South Wairarapa District Council ( District Council ), is based in the small town of Martinborough , as is the district administration.

Geographical location

With 2387 km² of pure land, the district is the largest district in the Wellington region. With 9528 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 4.0 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the lowest population density in the region.

To the west, the South Wairarapa District is bounded by the urban areas of the cities of Hutt City and Upper Hutt City , as well as by the Kapiti Coast district . In the north this is the Carterton District and in the south and east the coastlines to Cook Strait and the Pacific Ocean form the natural border.

The western part of the district is characterized by the eastern flanks of the Remutaka Range and the Tararua Range . At the foothills of the Remutaka Range are the two lakes Lake Wairarapa and Lake Onake . Apart from the plain around Featherston , the landscape of the central and eastern part of the district is determined by a mountain and hilly landscape that does not extend beyond 700  m to the south . There are three small towns in the district, Featherston with around 3400 residents, Greytown with around 2000 residents and Martinborough with around 1350 residents. All other places have less than 1000 inhabitants.

The mean daytime temperatures are between 20 ° C and 24 ° C in summer depending on the location and in winter between 8 ° C and below 0 ° C depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is between 1800 hours and 2000 hours per year depending on the altitude. The precipitation is between 1000 mm and 1400 mm per year, in the west in the mountains and in the higher altitudes in the south-southeast we meet precipitation beyond 2000 mm per year.

Population development

Of the 9,528 residents of the district in 2013, 1,276 were of Māori origin (13.2%). This means that 0.2% of the country's Māori population lived in the South Wairarapa District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 28,900  , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 90.2% said they were European, 13.7% said they had Māori roots, 2.0% came from the islands of the Pacific region and 2.1% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 15.7% of the population said they were born overseas and 2.3% of the population spoke Māori , of the Māori 12.2%.

The South Wairarapa District is again divided into three wards , the Featherston Ward , the Greytown Ward and the Martinborough Ward , each with three Councilors (councilors). Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the eight council members are re-elected every three years.

Like many other areas in New Zealand, the District of is South Wairarapa influenced mainly by agriculture, the region while at Martinborough , a major wine-producing region of New Zealand represents, especially for Pinot Noir wines.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 2 , which crosses the district in the northwest and by the State Highway 53 , which connects Martinborough via Featherston with State Highway 2 .
