The place is on the east side of the Remutaka Range about 22 km east of Upper Hutt and about 34 km southwest of Masterton . About 6 km southwest is Lake Wairarapa .

history

The Featherston Military Training Camp was a major military training center during the First World War . During World War II it was used as the Featherston prisoner of war camp for interning prisoners of war. The city became famous in 1943 when 31 Japanese prisoners of war in the camp were shot dead by guards who believed they were about to be ambushed by the prisoners.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,253 inhabitants, 3.7% less than in the 2006 census.

Infrastructure

traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 2 leads through the village and the State Highway 53 branches off to Martinborough to the east. The Wairarapa Line also runs through Featherston and connected the place via Upper Hutt with Wellington in the southwest and to the northeast via Masterton with the east coast of the North Island.

Education

Featherston has four elementary schools: St. Teresa's School , Featherston School , Kahutara Primary, and South Featherston School . It also had a high school ( Featherston District High School ) until the 1960s .

Attractions

Featherston houses the world's only surviving Fell locomotive in the Fell Engine Museum .

To the west of the city is a hill known as One Tree Hill (not to be confused with One Tree Hill in Auckland ). Although the hill is covered with trees, a single tree near the summit towers over all the others. A hiking trail leads up to this tree and back down on the other side of the hill. The area around the top of the hill and the access to the hiking trail have been equipped with picnic tables in recent years, and a new path to the top has been laid out with a view of the village. The tree itself is fenced in so that visitors do not run over its roots and to make vandalism more difficult.
