Riki John Flutey (born February 10, 1980 in Featherston , New Zealand ) is an English rugby union player who plays on the inner three-quarters and connector positions. He is active for the English national team and the English club London Wasps . Before playing for England for the first time in 2008, he was a New Zealand citizen and played for the New Zealand Māori selection .

Career

Flutey started rugby at the age of four. In his youth he still played as a scrum half and won the U19 World Cup with the New Zealand selection in 1999. It was only when he switched to the Wellington Lions that he was placed in the connector position. In 2002 he ran for the first time in the multinational Super 12 tournament for the Hurricanes , but was unable to assert himself in the long term during his time there and moved to England in 2005.

After two seasons with the London Irish , he moved to city rivals London Wasps . He left this club at the end of the 2008/09 season and moved to France for CA Brive . At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he returned to the Wasps.

Flutey ran for the first time for the English national team against the Pacific Islanders in 2008 and has been part of the squad's regular formation ever since. At the Six Nations 2009 he put four attempts and was next to Brian O'Driscoll the top scorer of the tournament. He was therefore nominated for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa and became the first player to play for and against the Lions.

Flutey has five siblings, his older brother Mano is also a rugby player and has made New Zealand's youth selections.
