Martinborough is a small town in the South Wairarapa District of Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the seat of the South Wairarapa District Council .
geography
Martinborough is located around 16 km southeast of Featherston and around 15 km south of Greytown on the Ruamahanga River . The Lake Wairarapa is located about 15 km west of the city.
history
The founder of the city is John Martin , who laid out the first streets in the 19th century in the style of the Union Jack . Many streets in the city are named after foreign cities that Martin visited. Before the city was founded, the region was known as Waihenga . Examples of colonial architecture can still be seen in the city, such as the Peppers Martinborough Hotel , built in 1892 .
Before the expansion of viticulture in and around the city, it was mainly a rural service center for the surrounding farms.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,470 inhabitants, 10.6% more than in the 2006 census.
Viticulture
Martinborough now has a large number of wineries that mainly grow Pinot Noir. The Martinborough area has a warm microclimate and hills facing east-west. Almost all wineries are located on narrow strips around the north and east side of the city and on the Dry River in the south of the city. They all follow dry river beds that have soil suitable for viticulture. In addition to viticulture, cattle and sheep breeding as well as the cultivation of olives, lavender and nuts can be found in the region. Tourism is also an important economic factor in the place.
Education
Martinborough has one elementary school, Martinborough Primary School , and Kuranui College in the neighboring town of Greytown serves as a secondary school .
