Mälsåker Castle is located on an island on the Swedish lake Mälaren in the municipality of Strängnäs . In the adjoining park of the castle, which is 12 km from Mariefred , concerts and guided tours are held in summer.

history

At the beginning of the 17th century, the estate passed from the Kagg family to the Soop family via marriage . Between the 1660s and 1670s, Baron Gustaf Soop had the main part of the current building according to plans by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder . Ä. to build. At the beginning of the 18th century the castle fell to the Gyllenstierna family , who had corner wings and a staircase added. The castle passed to the von Fersen family through the Wachtmeister family . At that time, the castle was at its greatest importance and provided space for an extensive collection of portraits , tapestries and furniture.

Shortly after 1898, the first restoration took place under the direction of the engineer Åke Sjögren . In 1943 Mälsåker was used by the Norwegian embassy for the training of soldiers. In January 1945 there was a major fire in the castle. In 1951 the Royal Schöngeistige Akademie ( Kungliga Vitterhetsakademi ) became the owner of the castle and renewed the roof. From 1993 onwards, extensive restoration work was carried out under the direction of the Central Office for the Preservation of Monuments , so that the castle was able to reopen to visitors in 2006.
