A small southern section joins the New Plymouth District , which belongs to the Taranaki region.
The district administrative town of Te Kuiti is by far the largest settlement in the district with around 4400 inhabitants. The Mokau River , which flows through the entire district in the east and south, rises in the southwestern foothills of the Rangitoto Ranges . It is the largest river in the district.
