The Westland District is an administrative unit in the West Coast region in New Zealand . The district council, called Westland District Council ( District Council ), is based in the city of Hokitika , as is the district administration.
geography
The Westland District has a total land area of 11,828 km², making it the largest, southernmost and in its extension the longest district in the West Coast region . At the census in 2013, the district had 8,307 inhabitants and was the district with the lowest population density in New Zealand with 0.7 inhabitants per km².
The western border of the district forms the coastline to the Tasman Sea . To the southwest borders the Southland District , which already belongs to the Southland region . In the southeast is the Queenstown-Lakes District , which belongs to the Otago region and from south to north the districts of Waitaki , Mackenzie , Ashburton and Selwyn , which belong to the Canterbury region, form the eastern border. In the northeast, the Gray District joins the last , which belongs to the same region as the Westland District .
The landscape of the entire district is determined by the New Zealand Alps . Only short stretches of coast in the estuary areas of individual rivers are flat and populated. The largest river by far is the approximately 100 km long Haast River , which flows into the Tasman Sea at Haast . The largest and only city in the district is Hokitika .
climate
The Westland District is, like the entire region of the West Coast, preferably under the influence of southwest and northeast wind currents, which can come from different directions depending on the local and topology. Southwest to westerly winds usually bring a lot of clouds that rain down on the western slopes of the New Zealand Alps and thus lead to considerable amounts of precipitation. Between 3000 and over 6000 mm per year are possible depending on the location. In the area around Westport, rainfall is between 2000 and 2300 mm per year. The mean daytime temperatures in summer are around 20 ° C, falling to 10 ° C at high altitudes. In winter, the mean daytime temperatures level off between 1 ° C and 3 ° C, between Westport and Greymouth up to 7 ° C., At altitudes below freezing point. The duration of sunshine along the entire coast and in the northern part of the west coast region is between 1600 and 1800 hours per year, but in the mountains it drops to less than 1300 hours.

Of the district's 8,307 inhabitants, 1,053 people were of Māori origin in 2013 (12.7%). This means that 0.2% of the country's Māori population lived in the Westland District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 29,000 compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
