Ngatea is a small town in the Hauraki District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Ngatea means something like "moved" in the Māori language . The original name of the place was " Orchard ".

geography

The place is located around 15 km south-southwest of Thames in the middle of the Hauraki Plains . The Piako River , which flows leisurely northwards east of the village, flows into the bay of the Firth of Thames after around 9 km . The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs directly through the town and connects it with Pearoa, which is around 19 km southeast .

history

Originally the Hauraki Plains were a swamp area and a popular location for New Zealand flax . After the flat land was gradually drained using drainage canals, the land was used for livestock farming and later for milk production.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 1,245 inhabitants, 6.7% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Ngatea is a small service center on the agricultural plain of the Hauraki Plains . The dairy industry is particularly important for the area.

natural reserve

Less than 8 km south of Ngatea is the 10,201 hectare Kopuatai Peat Dome , a freshwater wetland and the largest preserved and unchanged peat bog in New Zealand. Around 45 different bird species live in it. It was placed under protection under the Ramsar Convention on December 4, 1989 with registration number 444 .

Attractions

In Ngatea there is the Ngatea Water Gardens , a 5 acre garden with different water areas. Aquatic plants, fish and birds are for sale in the garden. Furthermore, the facility offers a small Can Museum with over 11,000 different aluminum cans in which beer, soft drinks and other items were located.
