The Piako River is a river located south of the Hauraki Gulf on the North Island of New Zealand . Together with the Waihou River, it is one of the most important rivers that deposited the alluvial land of the Hauraki Plains at the southern end of the Firth of Thames .
The two source rivers, Piakonui and Piakoiti Stream, arise in the Te Miro-Tahuroa Hills west of Matamata and join south of Kereone to form the Piako River. The river flows 100 km north before reaching the Firth of Thames 5 km west of Thames . On his way he passes the cities of Morrinsville and Ngatea .
A bridge, the Piako River Bridge , was built over the river in 1917 in Ngatea . At that time, water transport via rivers and canals was the predominant mode of transport. With the development of the first roads, the bridge was built to link Auckland and Tauranga .
