Hans Georg von Hammerstein-Equord

Hans Georg von Hammerstein-Equord (born September 17, 1771 , † December 9, 1841 in Hildesheim ) was a lieutenant general of the Kingdom of Westphalia .

origin

His parents were August von Hammerstein (1734–1813) and his wife Henriette von Münster (1752–1796), a daughter of Count Georg von Münster (1721–1772) and Wilhelmine Dorothea von Hammerstein-Gesmoldt (1730–1758). The imperial count Georg Werner August Dietrich von Munster and the diplomat Ernst Friedrich Herbert zu Munster were his uncles. General William Friedrich von Hammerstein (1785–1861) and the chief forest directors Friedrich (1775–1851) and Carl (1782–1867) were his brothers.

Life

From 1790 he attended the University of Göttingen , but led a life spiced by love deals and duels . Disguised as a Spanish monk, he went to the Iburg monastery . During his studies in 1792 he became a member of the Constantist Order , which he headed as a senior in Göttingen.

In 1799 he joined an Austro-Hungarian hussar regiment ; he took part in the campaigns in Germany until the Peace of Lunéville and then took his leave . He resumed his old way of life and now traveled through Italy as a traveling singer.

In 1807 he entered the service of King Jérôme von Westphalen. On February 29, 1808 he became squadron chief . In the autumn of 1808 he led his regiment to Spain as a colonel . Napoleon wanted to send it back as too weak at first. On April 21, 1809, his regiment rode down the enemy infantry.

In the Russian campaign in 1812 he commanded the light cavalry brigade of the 8th Corps.

He was arrested when his brother William transferred to Austria and was imprisoned in a French prison until 1814. He then went to Equord to manage his dilapidated property, but went bankrupt.

He married in Lasahn in 1824 Adelgunde von Bernstorff (1805-1875), daughter of Count Friedrich von Bernstorff and Fernandina von Hammerstein-Equord , the Prussian diplomat Albrecht von Bernstorff was his brother-in-law. Hammerstein had eight sons with his wife, including:
