Darfield is a town in the Selwyn District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The place is about 40 km west of Christchurch directly on the New Zealand State Highway 73 , which is also called The great Alpine Highway . The Midland Line runs through the town, parallel to State Highway 73 , on the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and the West Coast .

For the 2013 census, the town had 1935 inhabitants.

The place

Darfield is the main town between Christchurch and the West Coast . It is often called " The township under the Nor'west arch ", the name is derived from an arc of clouds that forms west of the town in the otherwise clear sky. It is caused by the condensation of water vapor that is carried upwards in the southern Alps .

economy

Darfield is in an area used for agriculture and ranching. It is the starting point for excursions to the Waimakariri River and Rakaia River as well as to the Southern Alps and a popular starting point for hot air balloons .

Darfield earthquake

On September 4, 2010, the Canterbury area was struck by a major earthquake . The epicenter was in the area of Darfield , but the greatest damage caused the quake in the city of Christchurch, 40 km east .
