Cass in the Selwyn District on the South Island of New Zealand today consists of a settlement of a few farms, but was ofgreat importanceat the time of the construction of the TranzAlpine railway line from Christchurch to Greymouth .

geography

Cass is on the TranzAlpine railway line , 15 miles southeast of Arthur's Pass and about 50 miles northwest of Springfield . The SH 73 passes the place.

history

The University of Canterbury had already bought land in Cass in 1873 and set up a field station there (outstation for research purposes), which was not used for this purpose until 1914.

When the Arthur's Pass over the New Zealand Alps was still used by carriages, Cass was a popular stop and offered overnight accommodation for travelers. As the construction of the railway line across the Alps progressed, the town of Cass with 300 inhabitants had its peak around 1910. The construction of the railway was labor-intensive and offered many people work in the village and its surroundings for years. With the completion of the railway line, the workers moved on. The population continued to shrink thereafter. A small shed remained from the heyday of the place, which at that time served as a train station and in 1936, with the mountains in the background, became one of the paintings for the New Zealand painter Rita Angus .

Origin of name

The place was named in honor of the surveyor Thomas Cass .
