The St. Mauritius Church (also St. Moritz Church , Czech Kostel svatého Mořice ) is a Gothic parish and provost church in Olomouc (Olomouc) in the Czech Republic . It was built in the 13th century and then rebuilt several times and is considered one of the most important examples of late Gothic architecture in Moravia . The Moritzkirche is dominated by two unusually asymmetrical towers, which also have different proportions. It houses the largest organ in the Czech Republic.

history

A church was first mentioned at this point in 1078. In 1257 the current building was built on the initiative of the Olomouc bishop Bruno von Schauenburg . The church was ravaged by fires and rebuilt several times, for example in 1398, 1404, 1411 and 1454.

During the Thirty Years' War and Swedish rule (December 14, 1642), Protestant services were held in the church for at least seven consecutive years.

Architecture and equipment

The church has been preserved in its late Gothic design.

The organ is the largest in the Czech Republic with 135 stops and five manuals. It was built by Michael Engler in 1745 and considerably expanded by Rieger-Kloss from 1959 to 1971 .
