The Schloss Neustadt is in the small town of Neustadt an der Orla in Saale-Orla in Thuringia . It is also known as the "New Castle" (probably as a reference to the neighboring Arnshaugk Castle , under whose rule the city was for centuries).

history

Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz had the palace built in the Baroque style in 1674 . It was built on the remains of an Augustinian monastery founded in 1284 . The farm buildings were added in the course of time and necessity. Moritz died in 1681 and Duke Heinrich moved his seat from Pegau to Neustadt an der Orla.

In 1718 the Neustädter Kreis returned to the Electorate of Saxony . Several princes then ruled until 1794.

In 1815 Neustadt fell back to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach . The palace became the home of the grand ducal family and part of some of the official rooms.

The three-storey building has a central portal and is equipped with a cross-vaulted staircase. The octagonal tower with a baroque dome characterizes the town in the small town.

Remnants of the wall and a round tower of the former monastery can still be seen in the well-tended park with sculptures .

The castle is located directly on federal highway 281 and not far from the market. After 1945 it was used as a vocational school and later as a retirement home.

The high house has housed a private school since 2008 .
