Wiesenburg Castle in Saxony, eponymous for the ducal branch of the family

The ducal house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg was one of the many branches of the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . Although the family members received the ducal title and rank, they only had inheritance rights in Schleswig and Holstein and had no sovereign lands.

history

The founder of the line was Philipp Ludwig (1620–1689). In 1664 he bought the Amt Wiesenburg ( Erzgebirgischer Kreis ) with all the villages from Johann Georg II, Elector of Saxony, but without sovereign privileges. He invested in mining around Schneeberg and Neustädtel . What initially looked like a failure, but made a lot of profit in the 1670s, so that Philipp Ludwig became a wealthy mining entrepreneur. In 1675, Philipp Ludwig sold the Wiesenburg Castle, which he had renovated, with the land for 100,000 thalers to his eldest son Friedrich (1651–1724). This was an imperial lieutenant general in Hungary. Philipp Ludwig bought Oberkotzau in 1686 from Christian Ernst von Brandenburg-Bayreuth , where he also died.

His son Friedrich had a very unhappy marriage with Charlotte von Liegnitz-Brieg-Wohlau (1652-1707), who divorced him. In 1723 he sold Wiesenburg to his only son Leopold (1674–1744). Shortly after Duke Friedrich's death, he sold it on. In 1725 Friedrich August I of Saxony bought the castle for 126,400 thalers. Duke Leopold had returned to Catholicism and married Marie Elisabeth von und zu Liechtenstein (1683–1744). He was a Privy Imperial Councilor and Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece (No. 648). He had five daughters and no male heir. With Duke Leopold, the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg line died out.
