Jan Vokál (born September 25, 1958 in Hlinsko , Czechoslovakia) is a Roman Catholic theologian and 25th Bishop of Hradec Králové (Königgrätz) .

Life

Jan Vokál initially obtained an electrotechnical diploma at the Střední průmyslová škola elektrotechnická in Pardubice and graduated in 1983 from the Technical University of Prague (ČVUT) as a qualified engineer for technical cybernetics .

Vokál emigrated from the then communist Czechoslovakia to the Vatican in 1983 and entered the Pontifical Collegium Nepomucenum , the Czech seminary in Rome, and studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He received in July 5, 1988 Ellwangen by Jaroslav Škarvada , auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Prague , the diaconate . After his diaconate in the parish of St. Dominic in Northfield and studies at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota he received on May 28, 1989 at St. Peter's Basilica by Pope John Paul II. The Holy Orders . He served as a parish vicar in Normal , Illinois from 1989 to 1990 .

From 1991 Vokál worked in the General Affairs Section (First Section) of the Vatican State Secretariat . He was also the personal secretary of Corrado Cardinal Bafile from 1991 until his death in 2005 . In 2005 he graduated in canon law and in 2008 at the Pontifical Lateran University in Canon Law and in 2009 at the Charles University in constitutional law doctorate.

Jan Vokál was appointed Chaplain to His Holiness in 1997 and Honorary Papal Prelate in 2007. In addition to his work in the State Secretariat, since 2005 he has been coadjutor of the chapter of canons of Santa Maria Maggiore , one of the four patriarchal basilicas in Rome, where he also exercises his priestly service. Since 2005 he has been canon of the cathedral chapter of the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Hradec Králové .

On March 3, 2011 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed 25th Bishop of the Diocese of Hradec Králové. He was ordained bishop in St. Peter in Rome on May 7, 2011 by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone , co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Prague, Dominik Duka and Erwin Josef Ender , Apostolic Nuncio in the Czech Republic . On May 14, 2011, the official inauguration took place in the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Hradec Králové.

In addition to his native Czech, Jan Vokál also speaks English and Italian; he understands German, Polish and Russian.
