Ramose (General)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ramose was an ancient Egyptian general who lived at the end of the 18th Dynasty ( New Kingdom ) and is best known from his tomb in Saqqara and perhaps also from the tomb of the general and later King ( Pharaoh ) Haremhab .

Ramose held military titles. He was king writer , general of the army ( ḥry-pḏt n p3 mš3 ), general of the lord of the two countries , representative of the army ( jdnw n p3 mš3 ) and priest .

His tomb is north of the tomb of Haremhab, which he built in Saqqara before he became king. The burial chapel of Ramose is a temple-like structure built from adobe bricks. The entrance is in the east. From there you come into a courtyard. This is followed by a second courtyard and here there are three chapels on the west side. The middle chapel was partially clad with decorated stone slabs, but little of it has survived. There were also three steles in the first courtyard, one of which is now in the Egyptian Museum in Berlin.

Otherwise, not much is known about Ramose. In the tomb of the haremhab, however, a subordinate of the general with the title of scribe of the army is mentioned several times . It seems very likely that both people are identical. Ramose was initially an army clerk under General Haremhab during the reign of Tutankhamun and was later promoted to an army general. The burial chambers of his grave were heavily stripped, but shabtis with the name of Ramose were still found . He was surely buried here.
