Warren Everett Green (born March 10, 1869 in Jackson County , Wisconsin , † April 27, 1945 in Watertown , South Dakota ) was an American politician and from 1931 to 1933 the 13th  Governor of South Dakota.

Early years

At the age of eleven, Warren Green moved with his parents to Hamlin County in what was then the Dakota Territory . In 1895 he began working as a farmer near Hazel . He soon became a prominent citizen of his hometown. For twelve years he was chairman of the school board in his home district. Green was a member of the Republican Party and was first elected to the South Dakota Senate in 1906 . Between 1913 and 1919 he was a member of the Department of Corrections . In 1922 and 1924 he was again a member of the State Senate. In 1930, Green was elected the new governor of South Dakota.

South Dakota Governor

Warren Green's two-year term began on January 6, 1931. His entire term was overshadowed by the Great Depression and its aftermath. That meant bank failures, economic problems and rising unemployment in South Dakota as well. The farmers, who were already badly affected by the crisis, also had to deal with a severe drought and a plague of locusts. As a result, large parts of the harvest were destroyed and the misery increased further. It was therefore a primary goal of the governor to provide benefits to the farmers. Corresponding measures had already been initiated by his predecessor William J. Bulow .

The national debt had risen sharply as a result of the economic crisis and the governor tried to solve the problem by cutting spending. Among other things, public sector salaries have been cut by 10 to 20%. Ultimately, the measures did not eliminate the problems, but they did alleviate them somewhat. As in the rest of the United States, the effects of the Great Depression were not overcome until the New Deal policy of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the mid-1930s. Warren Green ran for re-election in 1932, but was defeated by Democrat Thomas Berry .

Another résumé

After his tenure ended, Green retired to his farm in Hazel. In 1936 he was head of the South Dakota delegation to the Republican National Convention . Warren Green died in April 1945. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Parliament, with whom he had four children.
