Walter Dale Miller

Walter Dale Miller (born October 5, 1925 in Viewfield , South Dakota , † September 28, 2015 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was the 29th governor of the state of South Dakota between 1993 and 1995 .

Early years and political advancement

Walter Miller attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology . He then made a remarkable political career. Between 1967 and 1986 he was a non-stop member of the House of Representatives from South Dakota . During this time he was at times leader of the Republican parliamentary group and also President of Parliament ( Speaker ). At the same time he served as president of Dakota National Life Insurance between 1970 and 1985 . In 1984 he supported Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign and, four years later, George Bush's . In 1986 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota. He was the first incumbent who held this office full-time. When the incumbent Governor George S. Mickelson was killed in a plane crash on April 19, 1993 , Miller had to take over the office as his deputy.

Governor of South Dakota and beyond

In the nine months of his tenure, he promoted school policy. He also encouraged his state's citizens to take out health insurance. Other priorities of his brief tenure were rural development and the expansion of the telecommunications network. In addition, there were problems caused by a major flood in the east of the state. In 1994 Miller ran for re-election, but was already defeated in the primaries to former Governor Bill Janklow .

After his tenure ended in January 1997, he became a rancher in South Dakota. Walter Miller was married with four children and two stepchildren. He died on September 28, 2015, a few days before his 90th birthday.
