James H. Fletcher
James Hayden Fletcher (* 1835 in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island , Canada , † April 13, 1917 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota .
Career
The sources on James Fletcher are very poor. Nothing is known about his youth and school education. There is also no information in the sources about his career outside of politics. He came to the Dakota Territory at an unknown date . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1889 he was elected at the side of Arthur C. Mellette as the first lieutenant governor of the then established state of South Dakota. He held this office between 1889 and 1891. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . His life after the end of his time as lieutenant governor is in the dark. The sources only note that he died on April 13, 1917 in Portland and was buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park there.
