John F. Lindley

John Franklin Lindley (born August 29, 1918 in Lyman County , South Dakota , †  April 23, 1971 in Chamberlain , South Dakota) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1961 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota.

Career

John Lindley attended public schools in his home country. In 1938 he graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University . He then worked in the General Accounting Office in Washington, DC until 1941. During World War II , he was employed as a first lieutenant in the United States Army in the European theater of war and was awarded the Purple Heart . After a subsequent law degree at the University of South Dakota and his admission to the bar in 1948, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime he was also a prosecutor in Brule County .

Politically, Lindley joined the Democratic Party . He held several offices in their youth movement. From 1951 to 1952 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Dakota ; in August 1956 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . In 1958 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Dakota alongside Ralph Herseth . He held this office between 1959 and 1961. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate .

Between 1962 and 1964 he was civil assistant to the US Secretary of the Army . In 1964 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of his state. Lindley was a member of numerous organizations and associations, including some veterans and bar associations, and the Freemasons . He died on April 23, 1971 in Chamberlain, where he was also buried.
