George W. Snow

George W. Snow (born December 13, 1842 in Posey County , Indiana , †  November 8, 1927 in Springfield , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1905 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota.

Career

George Snow attended public schools in Wisconsin , where he had moved with his parents when he was two years old. In 1866 he graduated from a commercial school in the local capital, Madison . He worked on his father's farm and was later his employee when he was in the trade. During the civil war he served in the Union army . He took part in several battles and campaigns. He then returned to Wisconsin, where he worked as a shop clerk until 1869. Then he moved to Springfield in the Dakota Territory . He worked as a shop clerk again and then in a sawmill. Eventually he got into the real estate industry. In doing so, he made considerable fortune. He himself owned large estates in his new home. From 1883 at the latest, Snow was also active in the banking industry. He helped found the Bank of Springfield and became its president. Nevertheless, he continued to work in the real estate industry.

Politically, Snow joined the Republican Party . He held several local offices such as that of justice of the peace or district treasurer. In 1885 he took part as a delegate to the constituent convention of the future state of South Dakota. From 1890 to 1891 and again in 1897 and 1898 he sat in the Senate of South Dakota . In 1900 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state alongside Charles N. Herreid . He held this office after a re-election between 1901 and 1905. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, George Snow returned to his business interests. He was also a member of the Freemasons and the veterans' organization Grand Army of the Republic . He died in Springfield on November 8, 1927.
