Lyman County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . It has 3895 inhabitants. The county seat is in Kennebec .

geography

The county covers an area of ​​4,421 square kilometers; 174 square kilometers (3.93 percent) of this is water. It is divided into 17 townships : Bailey, Butte, Dorman, Fairland, Iona, Morningside, Oacoma, Pleasant, Pratt, Reliance, Rex, Rose, Rowe, Sioux and Stony Butte; and six disorganized territories: Black Dog, Lafayette, Lower Brule, McClure, Northwest Lyman, and South Lyman.

history

The county was incorporated on January 8, 1873 and the administrative organization was completed on May 21, 1893. It was named after William P. Lyman (1833-1880), an early settler, military man, and member of the Legislative Assembly of the Dakota Territory .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Langdeau Site . Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 2, 2018).
