Potter County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . The county seat is in Gettysburg .

geography

The district has an area of ​​2327 square kilometers; 83 square kilometers (3.56 percent) of it is water. It is divided into three disorganized territories: West Potter, Central Potter, and East Potter. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Walworth County , Edmunds County , Faulk County , Hyde County , Sully County, and Dewey County .

history

The county was formed on January 8, 1873 as Ashmore County . On January 14, 1875, the company changed to its current name. It was named after Joel A. Potter (1825-1895), a medic and MP in the Legislative Assembly of the Dakota Territory.

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 8, 2018).
