Gregory County is a county in the southern state of South Dakota in the United States . It was founded in 1862, making it one of the oldest districts in South Dakota .

The district has an area of ​​2728 square kilometers; 97 square kilometers (3.26 percent) of this is water. It is divided into 13 townships: Burke, Carlock, Dickens, Dixon, Edens, Ellston, Fairfax, Jones, Landing Creek, Pleasant Valley, Star Valley and Whetstone; and four disorganized territories: East Gregory, North Gregory, Southeast Gregory, and Spring Valley.

history

The county was formed on May 8, 1862 and the administrative organization was completed on September 5, 1898. It was named after John Shaw Gregory, who was an Indian agent and a member of the Dakota Territory Board of Governors .

The St. Augustine Church is one of eleven entries of the county in the NRHP.

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 31, 2018).
