Beadle County was formed as an original county from the Dakota Territory on February 22, 1879 and has been under self-government since July 9, 1880. It was named after William Henry Harrison Beadle , a brevet colonel during the Civil War . In 1869 he was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as the chief surveyor ("Surveyor General") of the Dakota Territory. He later became a professor emeritus of history.
According to tradition, the first permanent settler in County was Charles Miner , who staked his claim on the James River in the summer of 1879 . In the spring and summer of 1880, a railroad tracked through the county and new settlers came to the area. Three years later, most of the available land was cultivated.
On May 10, 1880, the foundation stone for Huron, later the county seat, was laid and on July 4, 1880, Governor Nehemiah G. Ordway appointed Eli C. Walton, Charles Miner and SS Neilson to the three officials who run the county should represent and organize for the time being.
25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 29, 2018).
