McPherson County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . It was named after James B. McPherson , a general in the Civil War . The county seat is in Leola .

geography

The county covers an area of ​​2,983 square kilometers; 39 square kilometers (1.29 percent) of it is water. It is divided into five townships : Carl, Hoffman, Wachter, Wacker and Weber; as well as two disorganized territories: West McPherson and Central McPherson.

history

The county was incorporated on January 8, 1873 and the administrative organization was completed on March 6, 1884. It was named after James Birdseye McPherson , a general in the Union Army .

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 6, 2018).
