The Union County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State South Dakota . In 2010 , the county had 14,399 residents and a population density of 12.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is at Elk Point .

The county is located in the extreme southeast of South Dakota at the confluence of the Big Sioux River with the Missouri . The Big Sioux River forms the border with Iowa and the Missouri the border with Nebraska .

The county has an area of ​​1210 km², which is divided into 1193 km² of land and 17 km² of water.

history

Today's Union County was founded on the 10th, 1862. It was first named Cole County after Austin Cole, a regional representative. Two years later it was in the course of a reorganization of the boundaries of the county, in view of the then ongoing Civil War and in support of the Union Army in Union County renamed.

The Baker House is one of 14 entries for the county in the NRHP.

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Union County had 14,399 people in 5,833 households. The population density was 12.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.41 people lived in each of the 5833 households.

The racial the population was composed of 95.7 percent white, 1.1 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 1.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years or older. 49.6 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 63,773  USD . The per capita income was $ 34,310. 4.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
