Germanus of Granfelden

Germanus von Granfelden (* around 612 in Trier ; † 675 near Moutier , Canton Bern , Switzerland) was the first abbot of the Moutier-Grandval monastery ; he is a christian saint .

Germanus came from an influential family of senators from Trier. He became a monk and first moved to the Remiremont monastery , later he moved to the Luxeuil monastery . When the Moutier-Grandval monastery was founded around 640, Abbot Waldebert von Luxeuil gave him the management of this monastery. Germanus was head there for around 35 years.

According to the legend Duke wanted Eticho the area around the year 675 Delsberg submit. Germanus acted as a mediator and met him with his companion Randoald near Courtételle (southwest of Delsberg). After arguments, Germanus and Randoald were slain by the duke's supporters on their way back.

His feast day is February 21 . His abbot's staff has been preserved to this day and is one of the oldest preserved crooks. It is kept in the Musée jurassien d'art et d'histoire in Delémont.
