Elk Point is located in southwest South Dakota on the left bank of the Missouri River , which forms the border with Nebraska . The city is located about 5 km south-west of the border with Iowa forming Big Sioux River , shortly before it flows into the Missouri. All other roads within the urban area are subordinate country roads, partly unpaved roads or inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs through Elk Point for freight traffic . A branch line branches off from this in a north-easterly direction, which belongs to a small contractual partner of the BNSF.

The recorded history of Elk Point goes back to the beginning of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804, when camp was set up here while driving along the Missouri. The place was already named by Indians and French trappers to the spread here occurring elk (ger .: Elk ).
In 1859, Eli Wixson from Sioux City built a house, making it the first white settler in what is now the city. Due to further settlers, the population of the place grew rapidly, so that Elk Point was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1873.
