The continuously open and city-owned airport is located at the intersection of the three states of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota .

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) classifies the airport, which is part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems, as a primary commercial service airport based on the number of 28,137 departing passengers (in 2011) .

location

The airport is located directly on the Missouri , which forms the border with Nebraska. The South Dakota border is 11 miles northwest. Sioux City is 8.2 miles north and is accessible via Interstate 29 .

Furnishing

The airport has two runways , each with a concrete or asphalt surface. There is a passenger terminal with two gates equipped with passenger boarding bridges . In the main building there is a baggage handling system with an issuing point, next to which several rental car companies have their bases.

Airplanes and aircraft movements

A total of 71 aircraft are stationed at the airport. Of these, 45 are single-engine fan guns, 16 jet jets and one helicopter. Nine military aircraft are also stationed there.

Of the 57 flight movements per day, 10 percent can be assigned to scheduled air traffic , 61 percent to general aviation and 13 percent to air taxi traffic. There are also around 16 percent military flight movements.

Airlines and destinations

American Airlines operates a scheduled service from here to Chicago with two daily departures.

Military use

The airfield was laid out for the US Army Air Forces in 1942 after entering the Second World War . In 1946 the airfield was taken over by the Air Force Reserve Command . In the same year an Air National Guard unit was stationed here.

incident

On 19 July 1989, it came at a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 of United Airlines ( air vehicle registration N1819U ) on the way from Denver to Philadelphia to a complete hydraulic failure. The aircraft could then only be controlled by means of the engine thrust and crashed on the runway during the emergency landing, killing 110 of the 285 passengers and a flight attendant. This accident is one of the most noticed in American aviation history, as a television team from the local station KTIV, located near the tarmac, filmed the attempt to land and the plane crash (see also United Airlines flight 232 ) .
