The first white colonization of the area and today's state of South Dakota occurred around 1860 when the McCook settlement was founded, which now forms the northwest of today's city. McCook was Union County's first administrative seat until it was relocated to Elk Point after the Civil War . The focus of the settlement now shifted to the southeast, to the Big Sioux River.

The population gradually increased, so that North Sioux City was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1951. The citizens refer to it as the gateway to South Dakota due to their location and their settlement history .
