The Botanical Garden Klagenfurt is a botanical garden founded in 1862 in the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . The site is located in a former quarry at the foot of the Kreuzbergl . The garden is scientifically managed and looked after by the Carinthian Botanical Center , a branch of the Carinthian State Museum .

history

On April 22nd, 1862, the Carinthian State Museum ("Rudolfinum") was commissioned to set up a botanical garden. It was laid out in the former cemetery garden of the Bürgerspital east of today's State Museum, but the building was not built until 1879. The complex was largely destroyed in a bombing raid in World War II, and the Rudolfinum was badly damaged. The museum building was repaired again, but the remnants of the garden were moved to an abandoned quarry on Kreuzbergl. The reconstruction of the Botanical Garden after the war did not begin until 1958 and was completed with the opening of the Botanical Center in June 1965.

Objects and activities

On the 1.2 hectare site of the Botanical Garden, plants from the local flora, such as the Carinthian wulfenia and other alpine plants, are cultivated, but also plants from eastern Austria and other countries. The area is thematically divided, there is a cottage garden, an area with plants from wet biotopes or a medicinal and poison herb garden. A water landscape with an artificial waterfall was set up on the rocky backdrop of the historic quarry. In the building of the Botanical Center is the Carinthian State Herbarium , which includes various collections of dried plants ( herbaria ). The oldest of these, the “Herbarium Vivum” , dates from 1752.

The tasks of the Botanical Center include the exchange of seeds with other botanical institutions within the framework of international regulations . There is exchange contact with more than 360 gardens worldwide, around 3000 seed samples are sent annually.

The Botanical Center publishes its own specialist journal called “ Wulfenia ”, and the staff also publish internationally in other botanical specialist journals. The institute's own library contains more than 30,000 books.

Like other botanical gardens, the area on the Kreuzbergl is open to the public and a popular local recreation destination. From May to September, weekly lectures on topics from the world of botany are held in the Botanical Center.
