With around 28,400 inhabitants (as of 2016, US Census Bureau ), Aberdeen is the third largest city in the US state of South Dakota . It is located near the border with North Dakota in the valley of the James River about 260 km northeast of Pierre . The city is the administrative seat of Brown County .
history
The city was founded in 1881 at the intersection of several railway lines. It was named after the city of the same name in Scotland by Alexander Mitchell , then president of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad railroad company . In 1882 it received the status of an Incorporated Town and in 1883 it became a City .

economy
Aberdeen is located in the most agricultural region in the state. In addition to animal husbandry (cattle, pigs, sheep), the cultivation of soybeans , maize , wheat , barley , rye and sunflowers play a role. Various production (medical supplies, mechanical engineering , rocket parts ) and service companies ( travel service providers , agricultural marketing, financial sector ) have settled in the city. Aberdeen serves as a health, commercial and business center for a large region.

The city is particularly attractive for anglers and hunters , especially in autumn during the pheasant hunting season. Nearby Recreation Areas are Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge , Richmond Lake (Northwest), and Mina Lake (West).
Every June the Oz Festival commemorates L. Frank Baum's work and time in Aberdeen. The Dacotah Prairie Museum brings regional history to life.
