The Aberdeen Regional Airport ( IATA: ABR; ICAO: Kabr ) is a public airport , which km east of the city, 3.7 Aberdeen , South Dakota is located. It is mainly used by general aviation , but is also served by a commercial airline.

The airport covers an area of ​​520 ha and is located at an altitude of 397 meters above sea level .

It has two runways :

In 2007 the airport recorded 52,421 movements, an average of 143 per day: 81% General Aviation ; 13% commercial flights; 6% air taxi ; <1% military. At that time 50 aircraft were stationed at the airport.

The passenger terminal is one of three in South Dakota with a moving passenger boarding bridge . The others are located at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport and the Rapid City airport . The bridges enable passengers to enter the aircraft directly from inside the terminal without having to go through the apron. As of March 2015, Delta Connection is the only commercially operated airline that flies to the airport. The only flight connection is with a CRJ 200 to Minneapolis-Saint Paul .

History of the airport

In 1923, the first fly-in event in South Dakota took place at the airport . During the Second World War , the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces to train glider pilots. To pull up the gliders, the Douglas C-47 Skytrain and the Waco CG-4A were mainly used.

Originally called Aberdeen Municipal Airport , the airport was renamed Saunders Field in 1946 .
