The Arch Brotherhood of St. Michael , full name: Brotherhood of St. Archangel and Prince of Heaven Michael , is a Catholic association of clergymen and lay people, to which the veneration of the Archangel Michael is a particular concern.

history

The brotherhood was founded on May 8, 1693 in Hofmark Berg am Laim near Munich in the Electorate of Cologne by the Wittelsbacher Joseph Clemens von Bayern , who was Prince Archbishop of Cologne at the time. It represented the counterpart to the Order of St. Michael , which was only open to the nobility . The founding praeses of the brotherhood were the Franciscans - Provincial Fortunatus Huber . In its heyday it had up to 100,000 members and around 50 branches in Bavaria , Austria and the Rhineland . The proportion of the nobility has always been disproportionately high. At the beginning of the 18th century, the entire Bavarian ruling house belonged to the brotherhood. The house church has been St. Michael in Munich's Berg am Laim district since 1751 .

At the intercession of Violanta Beatrix , a sister of Elector Max Emanuel , Pope Benedict XIII raised her to the rank of arch brotherhood on July 23, 1725 .
