The NSU football team plays in Swisher Field, a 6,000-seat stadium in the south of Aberdeen. Athletics competitions are also held there. Swisher Field is the second largest football stadium in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) after the University of Mary's Bismarck Community Bowl in North Dakota. The softball team competes in the Moccasin Creek softball complex near the campus. The baseball team plays in Fossum Field, which is located in the northeast of the city. The soccer field and tennis courts are located across from Jerde Hall on the east side of the campus. The Barnett Center is used by all sports teams for their training in the off-season. The facilities include a weight room, a gym, a swimming pool, a racquetball court, a wrestling room, a training room, a baseball batting cage as well as several classrooms, offices and changing rooms. The Barnett Center also houses the Wachs Arena, which with 8,000 seats is the home for basketball, wrestling, volleyball and track and field teams. The wax arena has twice the capacity of the largest arena in the NSIC.

NSU Sport is strongly supported by both students and the community. According to the number of spectators, men's and women's basketball games and football games are consistently in the national top 10 of the NCAA Division II. The men's basketball team had the highest national number of spectators in the 2005/2006 season.

The Wolves' head coach, Don Meyer, has been training basketball teams for over 30 years and has won numerous awards during this time.
