Donna F. Edwards (born June 28, 1958 in Yanceyville , Caswell County , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 2008 and 2017 she represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Donna Edwards attended Wake Forest University in North Carolina. After studying law at the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord ( New Hampshire ) and its admission as a lawyer, she began to work in this profession. In the 1980s she worked for the later Congressman Albert Wynn , who was then a member of the Maryland House of Representatives . She later co-founded and headed an association against domestic violence. She also served as the director of the Center for a New Democracy and the Arca Foundation . Politically, Edwards joined the Democratic Partyon. In 2008, she prevailed in the primary for the upcoming congressional elections against Albert Wynn, who then resigned his mandate early.

After Wynn's resignation, Donna Edwards was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the fourth Maryland seat , where she took up her new mandate on June 17, 2008. Since she was confirmed in each of the following elections, she was able to exercise her mandate until January 2017. In the 2012 congressional elections , Edwards prevailed against Republican Faith Loudon with 77:21 percent of the vote . Her last term of office ran until January 3, 2017. Since she waived another application for the House of Representatives in 2016 in favor of a then failed candidacy for the US Senate . Edwards became a member of the Ethics Committee , the Science, Space and Technology Committee, and the Transport and Infrastructure Committee, as well as five sub-committees. She left the ethics committee early. On April 27, 2009, she made headlines when she demonstrated in front of the Sudanese embassy in Washington against Sudan's policies in the Darfur region and was arrested.

In the 2012 congressional elections , Edwards prevailed against Republican Faith Loudon with 77:21 percent of the vote .
