Littleton Purnell Dennis

Littleton Purnell Dennis (born July 21, 1786 in Worcester County , Maryland , †  April 14, 1834 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . In 1833 and 1834 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Littleton Dennis was a nephew of John Dennis (1771-1806) and a cousin of the same name John Dennis (1807-1859), both of whom were Congressmen. He attended the Washington Academy in Somerset County and then studied until 1803 at Yale College . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He served in the Maryland House of Representatives from 1815 to 1816 and from 1819 to 1827 . In 1829 he was a member of the Executive Council of his state. As an opponent of President Andrew Jackson , he became a member of the National Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1832 Dennis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first constituency of Maryland, where he succeeded Daniel Jenifer on March 4, 1833 . He was only able to exercise this mandate for about 13 months, since he died on April 14, 1834. He found his final resting place in the congress cemetery in the federal capital. His mandate fell to John Nevett Steele after a special election .
