Helen Delich Bentley (born November 28, 1923 in Ruth , Nevada , † August 6, 2016 in Timonium , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1985 and 1995 she represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Helen Bentley studied at the University of Nevada and Georgetown University in Washington, DC and until 1944 at the University of Missouri . She then worked as a journalist and television producer. Between 1969 and 1975 she was chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission . At that time she was also working as an international business consultant. At the same time, she embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1980 and 1982 she ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the 1984 congressional elections , Bentley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of Maryland, where she succeeded Clarence Long on January 3, 1985 . After four re-elections, she was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . In 1994 she renounced another candidacy; instead, she sought unsuccessfully to nominate her party for the upcoming gubernatorial elections .

In 2002 she failed with another congressional candidacy. Since then she has worked as a businesswoman and lobbyist. She was CEO of Helen Delich Bentley & Associates, Inc.

Helen Bentley was married to William Roy Bentley, who died in 2003. The couple had no children.
