James Barroll Ricaud (1859)

James Barroll Ricaud (born February 11, 1808 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  January 24, 1866 in Chestertown , Maryland) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Ricaud attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1828 Washington College in Chestertown. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1829, he began to work in Chestertown in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1834 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives ; between 1836 and 1844 he was a member of the State Senate . In the mid-1830s, Ricaud joined the Whig Party, which was then founded . In the years 1840 and 1844 he was elector for this party in the respective presidential elections. After the Whig Party broke up in the 1850s, he became a member of the short-lived American Party .

In the congressional election of 1854 Ricaud was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Jacob Shower on March 4, 1855 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1859 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, James Ricaud initially practiced as a lawyer again. In 1864 he became a judge in the Maryland Second Judicial District. He died on January 24, 1866 in Chestertown, where he was also buried.
