Hart Benton Holton (born October 13, 1835 in Elkton , Cecil County , Maryland , †  January 4, 1907 in Woodlawn , Maryland) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hart Holton attended the common schools and then the Hopewell Academy in Chester ( Pennsylvania ). In 1857 he moved to Baltimore . Between 1857 and 1873 he worked as a teacher in Alberton . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1862 and 1867 he was a member of the Maryland Senate . From 1873 he lived in Woodlawn, where he bred horses.

In the congressional election of 1882 , Holton was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Andrew Grant Chapman on March 4, 1883 . Since he was not confirmed in 1884, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1885 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Holton withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked as a cattle breeder. He died in Woodlawn on January 4, 1907 and was buried in Baltimore.
