Anthony Gregory Brown (born November 21, 1961 in Huntington , New York ) is an American politician . From 2007 to 2015 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland . In 2016 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, of which he has been a member since January 3, 2017.

Career

Anthony Brown attended public schools in his home country. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1979 . He then spent a short time at the United States Military Academy in West Point , but then moved to Harvard University , where he stayed until 1982. In a further course he studied law there, already as an officer, until 1992. Since 1984 he served in the US Army . He enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and was trained as an officer. To this day he is a member of the army reserve, in which he holds the rank of colonel. During his active time (until 1994) he rose to captain. He was first a helicopter pilot and later a military lawyer. In 2004 he was reactivated and deployed in Iraq for a few months . He has received several medals for his various military achievements, including the Bronze Star , the Legion of Merit , the Meritorious Service Medal , the Army Commendation Medal , the Army Achievement Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal . His main occupation was as a lawyer between 1994 and 2007. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1999 to 2006 he served in the Maryland House of Representatives .

In 2006, Brown was elected Lieutenant Governor of Maryland alongside Martin O'Malley . After being re-elected, he held this office until the beginning of 2015. He was Deputy Governor and a member of numerous organizations and associations. One of the duties assigned to him by the governor was overseeing the closure of military bases in Maryland, taking into account the economic consequences for his state. He also campaigned for an improvement in the education system. Since the constitution forbade O'Malley to run again through a term limit, Brown ran in the gubernatorial election in November 2014 for the office. He surprisingly lost the election to Republican Lawrence J. Hogan . On January 21, 2015, Brown retired from the office of lieutenant governor, followed by Republican Boyd Rutherford .

In the 2016 congressional election , Brown was elected as his party's nominee in Maryland's 4th constituency to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Donna Edwards on January 3, 2017 .
