Huntington is a town ( Town ) in Suffolk County on the north coast of the island of Long Iceland , right on the border of Nassau County . The city was first settled in 1653. Huntington is part of the greater New York Metropolitan Area . According to the statistics of 2010 , the city had 203,264 inhabitants.

history

On April 2, 1653 , Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams and Daniel Whitehead of Oyster Bay bought a parcel of land from Raseokan, sachem of the Matinecock tribe . This parcel of land is now also known as "the First Purchase" (dt .: The first department known). The people of Oyster Bay immediately turned the land over to a group of white men who had already settled within the area. The "First Purchase" parcel was bordered by Cold Spring Harbor to the west, Northport Harbor to the east, what is now called Old Country Road to the south, and Long Island Sound to the north . In the course of time, more land was acquired by the native Indians, the city limits were extended roughly to Long Island Sound in the north and Great South Bay in the south and from Oyster Bay in the west to Smithtown and Islip in the east. In 1872 part of the city was abandoned, which then formed the new city of Babylon .

Most of the early settlers in Huntington were English who immigrated through Massachusetts and Connecticut. They therefore had a better relationship with the inhabitants of the New England states than with their Dutch neighbors in New Amsterdam in the west. In fact, at a vote in the city in 1660, it was decided to join the Connecticut jurisdiction for some protection from the Dutch.

As is common in New England, Huntington's town council was the first form of government. The local free men gathered as needed to redistribute city-owned land, resolve conflicts, distribute grazing land on city-owned land, hire teachers, or appoint someone to maintain public order or keep the roads in order and to resolve all other matters affecting the city as a whole. Shortly after the city was founded, the citizens of the city had an interest in regulating schooling in this way. The town council of February 11, 1657 decided to hire Jonas Houldsworth as the first headmaster. In 1660 the building of a school house was approved.
