The Greiner AG is a German - Austrian family company based in Kremsmünster (Austria), which is world's one of the largest manufacturers and processors of plastic and foam and the fifth generation of family ownership. With its four divisional companies, Greiner generated sales of around 1.675 billion euros in the 2019 financial year. In 2019, the company employed 10,745 people at 140 locations in 34 countries. In 2018, Greiner celebrated its 150th anniversary.

history

The original formation of the company was made by Carl Albert Greiner on September 7, 1868 as colonial goods and hardware store in Nürtingen ( Baden-Württemberg ). Among other things, a self-made soda was marketed, which was closed with a cork . After a short time, the company founder was only concerned with the manufacture and marketing of cork stoppers, which were cut with a cork cutting machine that was completely new at the time and which were also sold to third parties. The success was overwhelming, so that one concentrated only on the cork production, including the marketing of the waste incurred (including firelighters). The four sons of the company founder also gradually joined the company, which initially led to the establishment of the Austrian branch in Kremsmünster ( Upper Austria ) in 1899 . Another branch was founded in 1903 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols ( Spain ) to secure the import of cork. Both companies, in Austria as in Germany, developed well despite the World War, also thanks to their own import base in San Feliu near Barcelona. All locations operated under the name CA Greiner und Söhne GmbH and Co KG.

Technologically significant after the Second World War was the turn to a completely new material. In 1952, the company received a license to manufacture foam , which led to the next major growth phase , initially in Nürtingen and later in Kremsmünster. The foam products ( Moltopren ) were mainly sold in the furniture and clothing industry. Greiner already employed around 500 people at that time.

In 1960, Greiner Packaging was founded in Kremsmünster as a further branch of the company for injection molding and deep-drawing with a printing and mold making facility. Greiner Packaging initially produced plastic packaging such as cans for the pharmaceutical industry, yoghurt pots and disposable dishes.

Shortly after the start of injection molding, the first Petri dishes made of polystyrene began in Nürtingen in 1963 . That was the hour of birth of the Greiner Bio-One division. Before that, petri dishes made of glass were still used in pharmacy and medicine.

In 1977, another corporate division was established, which today operates under the name Greiner Extrusion , which is the world market leader in the manufacture of the corresponding machine tools in the area of plastic profile production.

In 1983 the Greiner Perfoam division developed from a foam company in Linz, Upper Austria, which was taken over by the Semperit company. The company produces visible parts and acoustic components for the automotive industry. Greiner Perfoam is now part of the Greiner Foam International division.

Starting in the foam division, the production of passenger seat cushions began in 1986. This division now operates under the name Greiner aerospace and, like Greiner PURTEC , which produces thermal insulation for boilers, belongs to the Greiner Foam division.

The activities in the field of foam production were bundled in a joint venture with the Belgian company Recticel in 1992 and operate throughout Europe under the name Eurofoam . First, after the fall of the iron curtain, the foam markets in Hungary and Poland were opened up. The joint venture was later expanded to include Germany.

Since July 1, 2010, Eurofoam has been managed together with Greiner MULTIfoam under the newly founded Greiner Foam , which is also based in Kremsmünster. In 2012, Greiner Foam founded a joint venture (Unifoam) in South Africa and thus Greiner's first production site on the African continent. In April 2020, Greiner increased its stake in Eurofoam to 100%.

Others

  • In 1992, CA Greiner und Söhne Gesellschaft mbH received the state award and was allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions. However, due to restructuring in 1999 and 2001 respectively, this right expired. However, the Greiner Packaging subsidiary received this award again before 2006.
  • In connection with the hunt for the Heilbronn phantom , it became known in March 2009 that various police stations in Germany, Austria and France were using swabs (cotton swabs) from Greiner Bio One International AG to record DNA traces at crime scenes, even though these, according to the Companies are not at all suitable for this, as they are sterile, but contain DNA residues from the production process. Such DNA contamination led to the mistaken hunt for a “phantom perpetrator”. In fact, there was no perpetrator, but the investigators or the forensic laboratory had been exposed to the DNA contamination of the swab sets. After the investigation mishap became known, the company indicates on its website that the swab sets purchased from the police stations are not suitable for this purpose at all, which was noted in the product description and the package insert from the beginning. At the end of July 2009, the Stuttgart public prosecutor announced that there would be no preliminary investigation against the suppliers of the smear sets (the Greiner Bio-One ). The observation process against the company had ended, said a spokesman for the authority. An initial suspicion against the company due to false pretenses could not be established.
  • In June 2015 the German Federal Cartel Office imposed fines amounting to 75 million euros on the five automotive suppliers Autoneum , Carcoustics from Leverkusen, the subsidiary Greiner Perfoam, Ideal Automotive from Burgebrach and the German subsidiary of International Automotive Components (IAC) in Düsseldorf illegal price fixing in the period from 2005 to 2013.
