LP (born March 18, 1968 , according to other sources 1981 in Huntington , New York as L aura P ergolizzi , LP ) is an American singer and songwriter with Italian and Irish roots.

life and career

Laura A. Pergolizzi was born in Huntington, Long Island , on March 18, 1968, the second child of lawyer Richard Pergolizzi and former opera singer Marie Pergolizzi (who died of cancer in 1986). Her older brother Richard Pergolizzi is a radiologist in Fairfax, Virginia. She graduated from Walt Whitman High School in Huntington in 1986 , attended Albany University, SUNY and moved to London after graduating in English Literature where she met her friend (and bassist) Alicia Godsberg with whom she started songs in 1991 composed. Both moved back to New York and formed a band called Lionfish in 1995, based on both zodiac signs (Leo and Pisces). Too Much Love, the first Lionfish CD was released in 1997, followed by Concrete in 2000. During this time LP worked in bars and restaurants and took singing lessons to control her voice. David Lowery of the band Cracker saw LP in the Lionfish performance, hired her as the backing singer on "Cinderella", a hidden track on the band's 1998 album, Gentleman's Blues, and took her as a guest on a tour of his band, whereupon she left her band Lionfish. He also participated in the production of their first studio album Heart Shaped Scar , which was released in 2001 on Koch Records . This was followed in 2004 with the second album called Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol , which she had developed with the producer and composer Linda Perry (ex- 4 Non Blondes ). The album was released through Lightswitch Records . Despite some good reviews, the album was largely unsuccessful. The song Wasted was used as the theme song for seasons 2 and 3 of the television series South of Nowhere on TeenNick a few years later . The MTV series The Hills also used a song from the album called Damage Is Done .

In 2006 LP visited the music fair South by Southwest (SXSW), where various record companies expressed their interest and a real bidding war arose. Eventually she signed with Def Jam Music Group , where she only stayed a few months. After artistic differences, she switched to SoBe Entertainment in 2007 . The song Love Will Keep You Up All Night , which she wrote with Billy Mann , was used on the reunited Backstreet Boys album Unbreakable . In 2009 LP began working as a songwriter for various artists . Especially on the album Superficial by Heidi Montag originate several songs, including the single More Is More , from her pen. Other artists she worked for were Cathy Dennos and Erik Hassle .

In 2010 LP moved to Los Angeles and signed with RedOne . For Rihanna's fifth studio album, she wrote the hit single Cheers (Drink to That) . She also co-wrote Christina Aguilera's top hit Beautiful People from the soundtrack to the film Burlesque . In 2011 she worked for The Voice finalist Vicci Martinez . She wrote the song Afraid to Sleep . Her own song Into the Wild was used for a Citibank commercial in September 2011 and also made the artist known to a mainstream audience.

In 2012 she signed with Warner Bros Records . This was followed by her major debut in 2012, the EP Into the Wild: Live at the EastWest Studios . She then performed at various festivals such as SXSW and Lollapalooza . In 2012 she was named "Artist of the Week" in Vogue fashion magazine . She also signed an endorsement deal with Martin Guitar . She also released a number of cover versions on video. These were created under the title The Ukulele Sessions on YouTube .

On June 3, 2014 her third album Forever for Now was released , on which she worked with Billy Steinberg , Isabella Summers ( Florence and the Machine ), Josh Alexander, Claude Kelly, Justyn Pilbrow , Carl Ryden and Rob Kleiner, among others . The producer was Rob Cavallo , who previously worked with Green Day and My Chemical Romance . The album reached number 132 on the Billboard 200 , making it her first chart success .

Her single Lost on You was released in 2016 , which helped the singer achieve her international breakthrough: the song reached the top of the charts in Greece and France , and the single also reached top 5 positions in Austria, Switzerland and Italy. In addition, the song was awarded triple platinum in Italy . In 2016 she also sang the song Back Where I Belong by the Swedish music producers and DJs Avicii and Otto Knows .

Laura Pergolizzi is engaged to Lauren Ruth Ward, who kisses her passionately at the very end of the official video clip for Lost on You . Lauren Ruth Ward can also be seen in the videos for Thightrope , Other People and When We Are High .

Music genre

LP plays indie rock with influences from pop . On her first albums she focuses on the ukulele and voice, set in music reminiscent of Bob Dylan . Although she works in mainstream pop and contemporary R&B songwriting , such influences were rarely found in her own songs. It was only with their album Forever for Now that there were some echoes of pop, especially through the production of Cavallo. Some of the songs are accompanied by dance beats , while their singing continues to be more in the direction of the singer-songwriters of the 1970s and reminiscent of Van Morrison and Tim Buckley . The song Lost on You breaks with these characteristics.
