4 Non Blondes was an American alternative - rock band of 1990 years from San Francisco . Her best-known member is Linda Perry , who also ran solo projects and produced songs by Pink and Christina Aguilera . By far the most famous song by the band was the single What's Up? which was released in 1993.

history

founding

The 4 Non Blondes were founded in 1989 in San Francisco . Bassist Christa Hillhouse and guitarist Shaunna Hall had known each other for a few years when they played together with drummer Wanda Day in the band JJ Noir and The Lesbian Snake Charmers in 1989 . After she broke up with her singer , Hall and Hillhouse came across Linda Perry while looking for a new singer , who was performing solo in various clubs in San Francisco at the time . The band had their first rehearsals on October 17th, 1989, the day of the Loma Prieta earthquake .

The band chose the name 4 Non Blondes after an incident in a park in San Francisco: When the band members were eating pizza there, a family passed by whose little son wanted to feed birds with the remains of the pizza. He was reprimanded by his parents because the pizza leftovers were dirty; while they looked at the band members disapprovingly. The members of this family were all blonde , and so the band spontaneously decided to call themselves 4 Non Blondes ( Eng. ' 4 non-blondes ').

Active years

Before the band began recording their first album, Drummer Day was replaced by Dawn Richardson due to drug problems . Day died of an overdose in 1997 .

After initially unsuccessful search for a record company , the band signed a record deal with Interscope Records in 1991 . During the recording of their debut album in 1992, Shaunna Hall was replaced by Roger Rocha. Reasons were not given by the producer of the album at the time, David Tickle.

Her debut album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! released the band in 1992. The album initially sold poorly, until 1993 the single What's Up? was decoupled. The title became a worldwide success and ensured that Bigger, Better, Faster, More sold a total of over six million times. Both the single What's Up? as well as the album were in Germany at number 1 for 10 weeks. This success in Germany led, among other things, to the fact that the band won the 1993 Bravo Otto award in the “Best Rock Band” category. At the Bay Area Music Awards, the band was recognized for the best album, for the best single and for the best singer. There was no further success.

In 1995 4 Non Blondes contributed the song Misty Mountain Hop to a tribute album for Led Zeppelin and contributions to the soundtracks of Wayne's World 2 and Airheads .

resolution

Perry, who worked exclusively as a solo artist until the founding of the 4 Non Blondes, found it difficult to integrate into the band from the start. In addition, Perry couldn't identify with the band's music and was dissatisfied with the album.

“I wasn't ready to be in a pop band. This picture did not match my vision. It was never right for me, I felt really hideous. I knew in my heart that I shouldn't be there. I still can't hear this record. I think I'm really annoying. I am not even her. I will speak of myself in the third party when this recording comes. I feel like I screamed the whole time. "

- Linda Perry

In 1995, while recording a second album that never came out, there were repeated musical differences between Perry and the rest of the band, as a result of which Perry separated from the 4 Non Blondes.

"And I finally got to a point where I said," Guys, I think we want to do two different records because you guys want to do the first one again, and I want a complete departure because I'm not happy with that Record was and still has the feeling that I can offer a lot more music than just a few shitty, little, damn, fast songs. If you want to do that, you can keep these songs that I wrote. I'm helping you find a singer, and you know I'll help you get it together. Otherwise I'll be out of here. ""

- Linda Perry

After Interscope Records also decided not to release the contractually agreed second album with the 4 Non Blondes, but with Linda Perry as the solo artist, the band broke up that same year.

The years after that

Some of the songs like In My Dreams , Too Deep , In Flight and Knock Me Out , which Perry had written for the second album of the 4 Non Blondes, she used for her 1996 solo album In Flight .

In 1999 Christa Hillhouse supported Linda Perry on her tour to her second solo album After Hours .

Linda Perry now works as a successful producer and songwriter. Christa Hillhouse occasionally appears on stage with the 4-Non-Blondes founding member Shaunna Hall and works as a web designer . Roger Rocha continues to work as a musician and is currently the singer and guitarist of the rock band Roger Rocha & the Goldenhearts . Dawn Richardson played drums in various bands and founded her own band 2Toggle in 2005 .

On May 10, 2014, the band had a small reunion for one evening when they were back together at the evening for women (a benefit event for the benefit of the LA Gay & Lesbian Center ) produced and moderated by Linda Perry and Brent Bolthouse Cast Linda Perry, Christa Hillhouse, Dawn Richardson and Roger Rocha stood on stage for a few songs. There they played their biggest hit What's Up? together.

Cover versions
