The band at the Big Day Out Festival

My Chemical Romance is a rock band from Belleville , New Jersey formed in 2001. Their style can be assigned to alternative rock .

Band history

founding

My Chemical Romance was founded in 2001 by Gerard Way and ex-drummer Matt Pelissier, who together with Mikey Way and Ray Toro formed the preliminary cast.

Since the band quickly realized that they needed a second guitarist besides Ray, they brought Frank Iero on board in 2002. Frank had played in numerous bands before. Just a few days before he joined My Chemical Romance, his band Pencey Prep, whose singer and guitarist he was, broke up.

I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love

The debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was recorded just three months after the band was founded within just two weeks and was released on the record label Eyeball Records . Singles from this album were Honey, This Mirror Isn´t Big Enough for the Two of Us , Vampires Will Never Hurt You and Headfirst for Halos .

In 2003 a contract was signed with Reprise Records and My Chemical Romance toured America and Japan. During this time they were already working on the second album. Due to Gerard's massive alcohol and drug problems, people seriously considered canceling the tour. After the tour ended, it was decided, for reasons that have not yet been made public, to separate from Matt Pelissier and replace him with Bob Bryar. He was previously a sound technician at The Used .

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

In 2004 the album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was released , which was produced by the star producer Howard Benson . With this album came the worldwide success and they spoke of the "My Chemical Romance Explosion". The big music magazines from all over the world fought for her, thousands of t-shirts and other merchandise were sold all over the world and for the first time one of her performances was televised on MTV's TRL, to which she was driven for the first time with a police escort, to get through the crowd of waiting fans into the studio. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge sold over 11,000 times in the first week in the US alone and has now reached platinum status. But the sudden fame came too quickly and Gerard in particular seemed to feel overrun and took refuge in his already existing drug addiction, which drove him to thoughts of suicide. When everything threatened to escalate, he finally spoke to the band manager and was persuaded by him to seek the help of a therapist. With success. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge brought out the singles I'm Not Okay (I Promise) , Helena and The Ghost of You .

At the beginning of 2005, My Chemical Romance supported Green Day on their American Idiot tour as the opening act and a short time later went on their own big world tour.

The Black Parade

Recording began on April 10, 2006, and exactly two years after Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge , The Black Parade , a concept album on the subject of death, including cancer, was released. The single Welcome to the Black Parade is by far the most successful single of the band and went to number 1 in the UK charts in the second week. A highlight on The Black Parade is the title Mama , to the musical legend Liza Minnelli , on special request the band contributed their guest vocals.

There is also a hidden track on this album , the 14th track starting after 1:30 minutes of silence. He is known by fans under the name "Blood".

The final concert of the “Black Parade” tour, and at the same time probably the biggest performance in the band's history, took place on October 7, 2007 in the sold-out Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City in front of 20,000 fans. This concert was filmed and released on DVD in 2008 called The Black Parade Is Dead! released.

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

In 2009 it became known that My Chemical Romance were working on a new album. They provided a cover version of Bob Dylan's Desolation Row for the filming of the Watchmen comic . The first single for the album called Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) was released on September 28, 2010. The song Death Before Disco, which My Chemical Romance had already presented live several times, became Party Poison and is also included on the album. Gerard Way announced:

"The new album won't be as layered as 'The Black Parade'. I expect it to be a little raw. It's great to have a fresh perspective. We have to make an album that shows that we've matured. If we just keep making a copy of the previous one, it won't help anyone. [...] We have to change. [...] The new things we've played so far feel more genuine. It happens less. "

Work on the current album began in autumn 2009, and fans were kept up to date via the official website.

On September 17, 2010, the title for My Chemical Romances fourth studio album was announced. The album was released in November under the name Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys . Contrary to previous announcements, the album is again a concept album and has California as its theme in 2019. The band provided fans with tips via various Twitter accounts, videos on YouTube and the official homepage. A page called "Transmissions" was opened on the homepage, which made radio broadcasts and videos available.

separation

On March 22, 2013, My Chemical Romance announced their split. In a statement published on their website, the band announces after twelve years and four albums that “like all great things” it has to end sometime and that that time has now come. The band closes with thanks to everyone who supported them and were “part of the adventure”, according to the official website.

On March 21, 2014, the best-of album May Death Never Stop You was released , which also contains a new song Fake Your Death .

In July 2016, the band posted a new logo with the letters "MCRX", as well as a short video with the first piano notes of their song Welcome to the Black Parade , which ends on September 23, 2016. This action sparked fierce speculation. On the one hand, it was suspected that the teaser could be related to the ten-year anniversary of The Black Parade (the X would then stand for the Roman number ten), on the other hand, rumors of a complete reunion were heating up. Due to the overwhelming response, the band was forced to at least deny the rumors of reunion on July 21, 2016 and only refer to a release related to The Black Parade .

Reunion show

On October 31, 2019, the band announced a reunion show in LA for December 20, 2019, which sold out within minutes. They will also play in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Germany, England and Japan.

Influences

The Misfits , Morrissey , The Smiths and Iron Maiden had the greatest musical influence on the development of the band at the beginning . However, after a few years the band had found their own style.

The lyrics, music videos and CD covers also contain a mixture of elements from comics , horror and fantasy , which can also be traced back to the fact that Gerard Way used to work as a professional comic artist.
